Starting out, Ten weeks or so

Here’s our first update,

We are in the end of our 10th week of expecting (middle of the 3rd month)-and it’s still fresh news to us. David and I have enjoyed so much, the calls, cards, flowers, hugs and gifts. Pat and Cailey are both excited, too. Pat wants a brother, and Cailey wants a sister. I love it!
David and I heard the heart beat this week, and it was miraculous. To me, hearing it was like finding out all over again that we’re pregnant. I know that’s weird, especially since I’ve been nauseous for about a month or so now. The doc prescribed B6 vitamins three times a day to combat nausea, which is working. What a welcome relief!
No cravings.
No need for bigger clothes. Yet.
No moodiness.
Not enough fatigue to complain about.
Food aversions-big time! Sweet things, especially early and mid-day, rev up my nausea. Sweet things include apples, grapes, peanut butter, and an array of food items I would not have called sweet before. To compensate, I gravitate toward vinegary/savory things. Bring on the Worcestershire sauce! Hello, pickled okra! I think that God meticulously made us in such a specific and genius way-it makes so much sense to abhor sweets at this time, to avoid gestational diabetes. I am anticipating the ice cream cravings later, when my body has been depleted of calcium. Nothing random or coincidental about food and pregnancy, if you think about it. And in typical Melissa fashion, I am analyzing and contemplatingeverything.
We’re out of the first trimester around week 14, according to my book. I thought it was around Thanksgiving, but not so!
In January we will have the next ultra sound. I believe it is then, that we can begin to determine the gender of the baby. David is all about knowing asap the gender, and I am all about not knowing (just yet). Luckily, we have several weeks to come together regarding that very big decision.
Our due date is still June 15th.
Last night as I sat very still, I felt something low in my tummy seeming to flutter around. From what I am reading, it’s too early to feel the baby (who just made fetus status this week, graduating from embryo). All I am saying is that I’ve never felt anything in that part of my body. And believe me, I’m pretty hyper aware of feelings in my tummy.
On a sad note, we lost our sweet cat Maggie yesterday. She thought that she was the biggest, baddest tom cat alive, when she was only a tiny female. She got herself into a situation yesterday where we couldn’t save her. I guess she thought that she was invincible, since we have been saving her and nursing her back to health on a regular basis. She will be greatly missed. I felt like an empty nester last night.
Much love,
David and Melissa

I never heard of pickled okra but if it works for you, dear Melissa have as much as you wish, I say.

And, Melissa, I am on your side re knowing the gender of the baby. When Carol's and my children were born we couldn't know and I believe were happiest just to know the babies and Carol were healthy. We love each one as a unique child of God. Please refrain from letting David talk you into finding out. If you choose to yourself, then do so but don't tell me.

Love you, all three.........Dad Dave

When trying to put pickled okra into context, think this: Bloody Mary garnish. It should make sense now.

Thanks for the clarification but I don't think I'll try it. Good tho that you have found something to eat when the cravings hit.

Do you have turkey for Thanksgiving or another tradition?

Just think, aat Thanksgiving 2009 there will be your baby to feed along with your other guests!!!

Love you all three........Dad Dave

I said to my co-worker the other day 'and when my brother's new daughter is born' and caught myself--well it could be!!

You guys may know one of my favorite mind-meanderings is thinking of names, so I'll just keep doing that (but with a purpose this time) and mebbe one will do....

Can I be your nanny? Or share with CayCay?? Oops -- I don't mean your nanny, Pave -- I mean her nanny!!
